Step 2 - Plan For Success! A business plan can and should be an integral part of the operations, from the planning to execution. It can be considered your blueprint, and you woulnd't go about building a home without blueprints would you? Neither should you build a business without it. It can start as very simply, and be make to carry as much detail as needed, but a business plan needs to start somewhere. Executive Summary - This section is a break0down summary of your entire business plan, it should be concise and too the point. In the business community this is known as "snap, crackle, and pop". Marketing - This should contain a snapshot or basic summary of your Marketing Strategy. Financial - This should contain a snapshot or basic summary of the financial requirements of starting and running the business. It can be augmented with attachments in the Appendix Section. Appendix - This should contain any supporting materials for your business plan, which may include:
It is advised to begin with a template, and therefore we have supplied 2 basic versions in MS Word format to get started with: Business Plan for a Start-up BusinessThe business plan consists of a narrative and several financial worksheets. The narrative template is the body of the business plan. It contains more than 150 questions divided into several sections. Work through the sections in any order that you like, except for the Executive Summary, which should be done last. Business Plan for an Established BusinessThe business plan consists of a narrative and several financial worksheets. The narrative template is the body of the business plan. It contains more than 150 questions divided into several sections. Work through the sections in any order that you like, except for the Executive Summary, which should be done last. Keep in mind these are merely templates, and should not serve as the definitive structure of your business plan. However, these templates are provided by SCORE, a very reputable source for business resources who has a genuine effort in seeing small business success. Conclusion Remember, the business plan doesn't have to be of a certain size or complexity, but it needs to start somewhere. Having a business plan does not mean that a static, dead document is being created, it should by dynamic and ever changing as your Marketing Strategy is. The business plan is meant to be followed as closely as possible, if something shouldn't be done, then the business plan should be modified. A good business plan will allow anyone not familiar with your business and come away with a very good idea of your complete scope of operations.
